Newcastle United F.C. vs Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. Lineups

Introduction

Newcastle United F.C. vs Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. lineups – Newcastle United aims to get back to winning this Saturday when they travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League. The Magpies had been on an eight-game unbeaten run following a poor start to the season. Still, they fell to a disappointing 1-0 Champions League defeat to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening. Eddie Howe’s side could not find a response to Felix Nmecha’s beautiful strike, condemning them to a first European loss of the campaign. Wolves, buoyed by two wins in their last three league matches against Manchester City and, most recently, Bournemouth, will be looking to take advantage of any fatigue in the Newcastle ranks. Gary O’Neil got one over on his old side last weekend thanks to Sasa Kalajdzic’s 88th-minute winner, but Newcastle’s visit will prove a sterner test.

Newcastle United F.C. vs Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. Lineups

Seeking to bounce back from their first Champions League defeat of the new term, Newcastle United trek to Molineux to meet Wolverhampton Wanderers in Saturday’s Premier League contest.

While the Magpies went down 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund in midweek, Gary O’Neil got one over his old side Bournemouth last weekend, overseeing a 2-1 win at his former home.

Match preview

After leading Bournemouth to Premier League survival in the 2022-23 season, many felt that O’Neil’s sacking from the Vitality Stadium was unjust, and the Cherries’ decision to replace the Englishman with Andoni Iraola is yet to be vindicated. O’Neil gladly piled more misery on a winless Bournemouth last weekend, as after going 1-0 down by a neat Dominic Solanke flick, Wolves leveled early in the second half through Matheus Cunha’s crisp effort before Sasa Kalajdzic’s 88th-minute winner sparked joy in the away end.

A foolish red card to Lewis Cook did not help matters for Bournemouth – a penny for Bill Foley’s thoughts as the man whose departure he sanctioned came up trumps on the South Coast – and O’Neil’s crop now head into Saturday’s clash unbeaten in three successive matches.

Wolves triumphed at the Vitality without the services of two suspended regulars, Mario Lemina and Nelson Semedo, who will return to the squad on Saturday to give O’Neil the best selection dilemma.

Semedo will expect to come straight back into the XI for Matt Doherty. At the same time, Lemina may very well displace Joao Gomes, who only lasted 45 minutes of their win over Bournemouth last weekend before being withdrawn during the break for tactical reasons.

Only Hugo Bueno (hamstring) and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde (muscle) are in the Molineux treatment room at present, and despite coming off the bench to good effect down south, Kalajdzic will likely continue his super sub duties as Cunha joins Pedro Neto and Hwang Hee-chan in the final third.

Meanwhile, injury was added to insult on two occasions for Newcastle on Tuesday. Isak was withdrawn inside the opening 15 minutes with a groin complaint before substitute Jacob Murphy. If had to come off only five minutes after his introduction with a suspected shoulder dislocation.

Newcastle United

Not only did Newcastle United suffer a defeat on Wednesday evening, but Eddie Howe lost two more key players on Wednesday night in what has been a growing injury list on Tyneside. The primary concern is Alexander Isak, who was replaced after only 15 minutes against Dortmund due to a recurrence of a groin injury that will keep him out this weekend.

Jacob Murphy, meanwhile, had to come off only five minutes after his introduction with a suspected shoulder dislocation and is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Elliot Anderson is also sidelined with a back injury set to keep him out for several weeks.

Harvey Barnes remains sidelined with a long-term injury, and there are no signs of center-back Sven Botman’s return from injury, while Sandro Tonali has been banned for ten months for illegal betting.

Talking Points

The elephant in the room: no wins in the last five Premier League games. It’s as simple as that, so you know today’s main challenge. Let alone score five goals, put on a show, or anything else. First things first: Newcastle must get back on track and win a game, no matter how they do so.

Even scoring one measly goal would already be a victory, so let’s start by that. No goals scored in the historical three games against stout adversaries, though, as the men have confronted Merseyside Red, Man Blue, and Man Red are a foul-smelling trend. Two draws headed those three stinkers, and Newcastle scored one apiece in contradiction of West Ham and Bournemouth. Let’s put one on the scoreboard and see how things develop.

Speaking of goals… will it be Callum Wilson, or will it be Alexander Isak, foremost the Magpies on Sunday? The former belongings them at a 0.52-per-90 pace likened to the latter’s 0.58. Wilson scored one goal, then Oct. 30. Isak has counted one since Sep. 17. No bueno. That said, give Isak a chance today, giving him the starting home in the XI, Eddie!

With Joelinton out for the following two games. If the middle problem is automatically solved, and it picks itself: Bruno, Longstaff, and Willock. There is no depth past that as if that was surprising at this point…

The problem is now higher up the pitch, with ASM Anthony Gordon, besides Miguel Almiron (presumptuous only one of Isak/Wilson plays as a striker), aggressive for two places, one per wing. Miggy is the foremost man in this three-player race, as the correct flank seems to be under his lock. On the left, though, things are more complicated. Casanovas are not so strong overall. If so maybe ASM can refind his best self without consuming to track back that much? Or is Gordon staring for the second time in a row after responsibility so a week ago? Questions, queries… I’m rambling on Gordon getting the call with ASM coming from the pine tree, and the game is already open and broken. If so he can enjoy more liberty and go with his authentic style of (offensive) play.
