Talking Points

The elephant in the room: no wins in the last five Premier League games. It’s as simple as that, so you know today’s main challenge. Let alone score five goals, put on a show, or anything else. First things first: Newcastle must get back on track and win a game, no matter how they do so.

Even scoring one measly goal would already be a victory, so let’s start by that. No goals scored in the historical three games against stout adversaries, though, as the men have confronted Merseyside Red, Man Blue, and Man Red are a foul-smelling trend. Two draws headed those three stinkers, and Newcastle scored one apiece in contradiction of West Ham and Bournemouth. Let’s put one on the scoreboard and see how things develop.

Speaking of goals… will it be Callum Wilson, or will it be Alexander Isak, foremost the Magpies on Sunday? The former belongings them at a 0.52-per-90 pace likened to the latter’s 0.58. Wilson scored one goal, then Oct. 30. Isak has counted one since Sep. 17. No bueno. That said, give Isak a chance today, giving him the starting home in the XI, Eddie!

With Joelinton out for the following two games. If the middle problem is automatically solved, and it picks itself: Bruno, Longstaff, and Willock. There is no depth past that as if that was surprising at this point…

The problem is now higher up the pitch, with ASM Anthony Gordon, besides Miguel Almiron (presumptuous only one of Isak/Wilson plays as a striker), aggressive for two places, one per wing. Miggy is the foremost man in this three-player race, as the correct flank seems to be under his lock. On the left, though, things are more complicated. Casanovas are not so strong overall. If so maybe ASM can refind his best self without consuming to track back that much? Or is Gordon staring for the second time in a row after responsibility so a week ago? Questions, queries… I’m rambling on Gordon getting the call with ASM coming from the pine tree, and the game is already open and broken. If so he can enjoy more liberty and go with his authentic style of (offensive) play.
