What is 5G Network?
The 5G Network refers to the fifth age band of mobile networks. This new equipment will raise connection speed, minimize latency (web response time) and exponentially multiply the number of connected strategies. In other words: we will be related to everything all day and in the shortest time possible. Gone is the old 1G network, one of those first mobile phones that only allowed to talk. 2G technology introduced SMS; little by little, our ‘smartphone’ became an increasingly wide-ranging communication tool. First, the Internet connection (3G) was incorporated. Then broadband (4G) arrived, bringing with it the playback of videos in real-time (streaming) or augmented reality, something we are already very accustomed to. Still, a few years ago, they were utterly unfeasible.
5G will improve connectivity and considerably reduce latency time. As with many other technological improvements, 5G is already here and will be here to stay beyond the technical wars between China and the United States. Implementing the fifth generation mobile network will change how we communicate, multiply the capacity of information highways and allow everyday objects, from the fridge to cars, to link in real-time. Its placement represents a true technological revolution that will allow, for example, remote-assisted surgical interventions, such as the one recently carried out in Barcelona, to deploy new fleets of autonomous vehicles and coordinate agricultural work through radars installed at different points in a crop field.
How 5G will Change the World
The most significant development will come from the hand of speed. 5G will allow browsing up to 10 BPS (gigabytes per second), ten times faster than the primary fiber optic offers on the market. At this rate, you can, for example, download a full movie in a matter of seconds.
In addition, latency (the response time of the network) will also experience a significant improvement. According to the workers, this could be reduced to 5 milliseconds, a period almost invisible to humans, allowing us to connect practically in real-time. This data is essential, for example, to lessen the response time of an autonomous vehicle to improve the safety of both the occupants and any pedestrian around it.
Thanks to this new knowledge, we can, for example, exponentially increase the number of connected devices. Vehicles, industrial robots, urban gear (speed bumps, roads, bus stops), or any microelectronic device we have at home will be able to connect and share data in real-time.
Is 5G Dangerous?
The WHO classified wireless technology as level 2B carcinogenic, a very generic classification that, according to the health organization itself, refers to compounds “possibly carcinogenic to humans, that is, when a causal association is considered credible, but chance, bias or confounding cannot be ruled out with reasonable confidence.
However, although the WHO has stated that “the studies carried out to date do not indicate that environmental exposure to RF fields (radiofrequency) increases the risk of cancer or any other disease,” specific organizations warn of the potential health hazards of mobile phone waves. For example, the NGO Ecologists in Action recently issued a statement warning that the implementation of 5G had been carried out “without evaluating its possible health and environmental effects, despite the forceful and numerous scientific calls to apply the principle precautionary.”
For now, with scientific studies in hand, it seems that 5G will bring more benefits than problems.
